In 2012, our creative director had the chance to spend a week in Malawi with Annie Lennox, as she went to visit some of the projects supported by her foundation, SING.

Mary’s Meals are a large NGO providing daily porridge to thousands of children across Africa. This allows them to concentrate and draws them to school, helping create brighter futures.

The organisation grew out of a charity called Scottish International Relief (SIR), which was set up after Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow and his brother Fergus took aid from their home in Scotland to Bosnia-Herzegovina, during the conflict in 1992. Mary’s Meals was then created in 2002 after Magnus visited Malawi during a famine and met a mother dying from AIDS. When Magnus asked her eldest son Edward what his dreams were in life, he replied simply: “I want to have enough food to eat and to go to school one day.”

Began by feeding just 200 children in Malawi in 2002, today Mary’s Meals feed 2,429,182 hungry children every school day across 18 countries.
