BA Flying Start: Ghana

Flying Start is the global charity partnership between British Airways and Comic Relief that helps people in the UK and around the world to have the best possible start in their lives.

To provide a way of telling that story we created the storyline of a hat that was found and made its way back to its owner. To achieve this, we followed young Mohamed in rural Ghana and in the process, got a glimpse of the various ways that Flying Start has had a positive impact on him and his community.

Since the partnership began in 2010, British Airways customers and colleagues have raised over £27m, thanks in part to our films for Flying Start.

With this in-flight film shown for 2 yrs and receiving millions of viewings on BA flights – as well as over 16,000 views on YouTube – it’s probably our most-seen piece of work yet!

As much as needed, as long as needed

Staying the course is what it has taken to see River Blindness, a remote neglected tropical disease carried by the bites of black flies, slowly becoming a disease of the past.

In 1987, Merck committed to donate Mectizan – as much as needed, for as long as needed – with the goal to help eliminate river blindness. To celebrate the Mectizan Donation Program‘s 35th anniversary we went through our archives of footage, some filmed by us, some by scientists many years ago, and worked with a South African graphics artist to tell the story of 35 years of progress towards eliminating one of the most robust diseases known to mankind.

With a bespoke composed soundtrack and in-house voice-over, we managed condense 35 years into a powerful 3 and a half minutes!

The film was shown at the annual Mectizan Expert Committee meeting in Malawi in 2022, and since was sent out by MSD CEO Rob Davis to all their staff.

Leprosy in Ghana: Kofi’s Story

In the developing world, the impact of Hansen’s disease (also known as leprosy) is still being felt. For many with this debilitating condition, the social stigma (sometimes self-imposed) can lead to social exclusion and even estrangement from family.

In Ghana, Kofi Nyarko is a man on a mission. As someone who has had Hansen’s disease himself, he now dedicates his life to reuniting other sufferers with their families – some of whom haven’t seen their family in decades. In this moving film, Kofi shares his message of hope. Today, Hansen’s disease can easily be treated with a simple drug. But the social stigma is more difficult to overcome. We travel with him on two momentous days, as James and Ekua are reunited with their families after more than 30 years apart.

This film was commissioned by Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) to give a human face to Hansen’s disease.
